Life is like a hectic train that keeps on going without stopping, and if we didn’t make the time to breathe, we wouldn’t be able to catch any happy moment, even with our amazing furry friends.
We may not be aware of it, but we sometimes forget to show our dogs the love and affection they need and want. First, we have to understand that there is a thin line between showing them the affection we want and the affection they deserve.
Obviously, spending our entire existence appreciating them would never be enough, as well as hugging them closely. Seriously, we don’t deserve them, which is why we have figured out a few more ways to show our dogs that we truly love and appreciate them being in our lives.
Make time for morning cuddles
You may get stressed already because of your morning routine that you don’t want to mess up. But, doesn’t your dog deserve 10 minutes of your morning? If you answered with “hell yeah, he does!”
then try your best to wake up 10 minutes before. You can cuddle him in bed, on the kitchen floor, or while having a quick walk around the neighborhood. It is a good way to bond with him more and to give him a chance to empty his bladder, too, before you go to work.
Don’t hide his toys when you are gone
If your day is fully packed with tasks that will make you away from your pup, then don’t let him wait alone. Leave all of his toys out and let him play with them freely, he would truly appreciate it.
Showing affection doesn’t necessarily mean hugging and cuddling him, it also means treating him right and giving him what he wants, even if you don’t want to. Make sure to stuff his toys with treats so he can have fun playing with them. Also, it is a good way to keep him distracted from your absence. Dogs feel lonely, too.
Let your pooch hang out with you
Your dog appreciates being around you regardless of what you are doing, even if you are not giving him any attention.
You have to make him feel like he is an important part of your busy day, just by allowing him to lay next to you while you are working would mean the world to him. You will be having a great company anyway.
Don’t forget to let him stay around when it is family time, too, he will truly feel loved.
Focus on Touch
Our first instinct when we see our doggy, or basically any animal, is patting them on the head to show them love and affection. But for dogs, that’s a sign of dominance.
Instead, we should touch them behind their ears or massage their bellies. If you have more time to offer, then brush your dog’s hair with a soft brush. He will love it and feel your affection through it.
Have quick walks throughout the day
Just like you, dogs need to have a break from their routine and “boring” days, so whenever you have five minutes to spare, surprise your dog and take him in a quick walk.
It doesn’t matter if it is long or short, just the fact that you give your dog a chance to be outside with you would mean everything to him. Plus, you will get to breathe and feel refreshed, too.
Pay attention to praise
When our dogs misbehave, we turn our attention to them quickly and easily. But when they behave well, we don’t really praise them. Instead, we sit there quietly watching them being the cute little angels they are.
We have to start paying more attention and praise them more often to reinforce their good behavior, whether by giving him treats or love for a solid 30 seconds.
Add training time to your day
One of the greatest ways to show your dog that you care is giving him a training class, at least, one hour of your time per day or per week.
As you know, training is very important for dogs in order to learn how to behave, and they love it anyways, especially if their favorite human is the one giving them rules and boundaries.
Learn the body language
Since you have a dog living in your house, you have to learn how to understand his language. When he is excited, happy, sad, hungry or scared, you’d be there tuning in every emotion he feels.
For example, if he was angry, he will have his ears back and hackles up. You have to be able to read his body movement to help him whenever he needs to.
Take him for a drive
There is a big chance that your dog loves car rides. So if you are going to drive to the store or to pick someone up, take your furry pup along.
You shouldn’t let him ride with you only for vet visits because he may develop car anxiety. Just take your adorable puppy in a quick spin for no reason and let him live his best life.
Don’t sleep without a walk
It doesn’t matter if you already took him in walks during the day because a walk a night is how you end your day right.
After dinner, just grab your furry best friend and go on a long, calm walk when you can breathe in the cold breezes while your dog is meeting his biological needs. It is a great way to relax from the day’s stress anyway and to bond with your pup more.
In general, there is no better way to show affection to your little pooch than giving him walks, treats, and time!
