1. How to calm down an overly excited dog
Whenever a dog sees a leash, he gets super excited, sometimes too excited. This excitement is perceived as healthy and wholesome, especially that we always want to see our dog happy. But depending on your dog breed and size, this “excitement” can become a little bit too hard to contain. The first mistake you’re making is taking your dog outside while he’s still in this euphoric phase. It might sound a little bit mischievous, but instead of putting him on a leash and going outside, try placing the leash on your dog at least 2 times per day but not going for a walk. The purpose of this exercise is to change your dog’s behavior whenever he sees his leash or you attach it to him. Whenever he’s calm about it, reward him for it and encourage this type of behavior by going outside. If he’s still overly excited, wait for him to calm down, even if it takes hours, and then attach the leash and go outside. This exercise takes time and patience, but nobody wants to walk out the door with a crazy dog since it’s way harder for you to keep control. Also, remember to always let your dog go for a run when outside. They need to get rid of all the extra energy they have accumulated during the day. If not, that will only lead to a hyperactive dog 24/7.
