5. How to get your pup to listen to you

Something that happens a lot whenever owners decide to go for a walk with their dogs is that their attention suddenly shifts. At home, your dog might be super attentive and respectful, but once he goes through the door, he suddenly doesn’t even acknowledge you or your orders. This happens a lot, which means it’s normal behavior, but that doesn’t mean it’s acceptable. Your dog stops paying attention to you because he’s paying attention to something else, the smells, other dogs, other people on the street, and a million new things that stimulate them. What you need to do is work on your dog’s focus and attention from a controlled environment, and the best thing to use whenever you want to teach something is treats! Grab a treat and throw it over your dog’s head. Once he eats it, call him by his name. When he turns toward you and gets all excited, throw another treat over him. This works outside as well because your dog will associate with you with getting treats. But don’t worry, treats will only be needed for the first couple of weeks or until he learns to pay attention to you! Now that you’ve learned about how to walk a dog with behavioral problems, feel free to share these tips with other dog parents you may know, and of course, don’t forget to implement some of these training tips into your daily schedule so you and your dog can enjoy smooth, happy walks!
