#3 – Melanoma

These black or dark-brown tumors are a type of cancer that attacks the pigmented skin cells. While many skin masses in dogs are benign, the ones that appear at the nailbed and in the mouth tend to be extremely aggressive. An x-ray will determine if the mass needs to be removed.

In some cases, cancer can spread to the lymph nodes, liver, lungs, or other organs. The treatment then would require a severe combination of surgery, radiation, and immunotherapy. Chemotherapy for melanoma is typically ineffective both dogs and humans.
