3. Treatment
As soon you doubt frostbite on your pet, you must provide immediate treatment. In case your dog spent a long time being exposed to the cold, then immediately bring them inside and warm them up. Here are a few ways to treat frostbite in dogs:
- Heat a towel up in the dryer or with a hairdryer to bring up the body temperature of your dog slowly. Put the warmed towel on the affected area but avoid placing heat directly on the skin.
- Use tepid water to warm the area slowly. You may end up causing more damage if the water is too hot.
- Do NOT massage or rub the frozen tissue.
- Do NOT use ice or snow on the frostbite.
If your dog’s skin turned darkened instead of turning red, you would need to seek immediate veterinary care.
