1. Baby Steps
The first step is to treat your dog like a baby. You would never expect a baby to know how to crawl after they’re born, so how would your dog know he’s supposed to fetch the ball and give it to you afterward? Everything is a learning process. It doesn’t matter if you have a puppy or an adult dog. Every dog must be introduced to dog games like you would introduce a toy to a baby. Adult dogs, especially when they get adopted, are expected to know everything already since they are grown, but the truth is, you don’t know what his previous family taught him. If he was abandoned by his previous owners, it’s safe to say that it doesn’t matter, and you’ll have to teach him like it’s the first time. We would be lying if we told you it’s easy and quick when in reality, it takes a lot of work and patience. That’s why some people opt for hiring a certified dog trainer. But we do understand not all people can afford one, and this is why you should start slowly. The first thing you must do is introduce the toy to your dog, whether it’s a ball or a rope, let it sit on the floor. Allow the dog to approach it, smell it, and even touch it.
