5. Make Sure It Sticks!
Last but not least, after teaching your dog something, you should keep incentivizing such behaviors for the next couple of days to ensure that your dog truly learned. This includes playing with him in different locations, not just inside the house but at the park as well, and also having other people play with your dog. Does he obey other people’s voices? What about small children? If they throw a ball, will our dog fetch? If your dog doesn’t comply, you shouldn’t feel like you’re a bad trainer or that it was all a waste of time, because we guarantee it wasn’t! It’s perfectly normal for animals to be confused in different surroundings and with different people. Remember that patience is vital, and all you have to do is train your dog for a little longer. Keep in mind that training your dog doesn’t have an expiry date. You’ll be training your dog for their entire life, and that’s ok! However, if you’re interested in service dog training, know he’ll need specific dog training classes with a certified instructor. Some things we can teach our dogs and other things we must leave for professionals. Just be aware of where that line is and have fun with your dog, at the end of the day, that’s what matters!
