7. Try to adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue center

Even though this article is about scams, we always encourage people to adopt rather than buy when buying pets. Of course that if you are looking for a certain breed, especially an expensive or rare one, it’s very unlikely you’ll get them for free, but think about all the stray and abandoned dogs out there who are looking for a home. A breed doesn’t define a dog, every dog is unique and beautiful in its way, and you’ll be spending little to no money compared to buying a dog. Adoption fees are often very reasonable; after all, shelters’ purpose is to find new homes for their dogs for new ones to come in! A few things you should look out for in pet scams are cute pictures that are often stolen, those heartbreaking stories that are usually made up, and of course, extremely low prices for an expensive breed or extremely high prices. When adding a new member to the family, don’t be shy about asking questions. It’s your job to make sure you’re not being taken advantage of and that your future dog comes home healthy!
