5. Don’t forget to train your dog
If your dog is afraid of children, it’s your job to train them and get them to change their behavior. This will certainly take some time and effort, but it’s perfectly possible. Start with something simple, like offering your dog some treats whenever they see a child approaching and remaining calm. As time goes by, you can allow children to come increasingly near your dog, while keeping the same mechanism of praising their behavior and rewarding them with treats. If your dog keeps showing signs of stress, do not punish them – this will just reinforce and justify the fear they already feel, which can only make things worse. If you can’t do this by yourself, reach out to a professional. As we have mentioned before, a scared dog can bite, and it’s important to prevent this type of situation for the sake of your puppy and the children around them.
